Scaler learning platform - Foundational Ed-Tech Platform
I. Project Overview and Context
As Tech Lead and Founding Member, I architected and delivered the foundational platform for Scaler Academy from the ground up to support high daily usage and rapid feature expansion. Leading the Classroom Pod team of 5+ engineers (UI & backend), I managed high-stakes challenges including platform migrations, new products, and technical debt. As part of the founding team, I translated the product vision into a scalable technical architecture that would serve as the foundation for the company's growth.
II. Foundational Architecture and Core Components
I architected and delivered the foundational learning platform, which is used daily by 10,000+ students. The core architecture I laid out enables easy development of ever-growing products and features, and now powers over 20+ user-facing products and numerous internal products. I owned and built critical user experiences from scratch, including live and recorded class experiences, problem-solving experiences, one-on-one call and mentor session experiences, and referral experiences. The platform utilizes React and Redux for the frontend, with Ruby on Rails for backend components, along with Sidekiq and Redis for background tasks.
III. Key Initiatives and Features Led
I ideated and delivered a retention-driving Gamification module to make learning highly engaging and addictive, featuring streaks and virtual coins. Built with React, Redux, and Ruby on Rails, with multiple background tasks using Sidekiq and Redis to compute scores periodically, this module resulted in over 2,000+ students exercising consistently for more than 30 days straight, with some maintaining consistency for over four months. I led the complex effort to split a core product (previously InterviewBit Academy) into separate systems—one focused on self-serve interview preparation and the other focused on learning (Scaler). This involved managing intricate database migrations and coordinating across multiple teams. Additionally, I oversaw the integration of Elasticsearch to calculate student engagement on the platform, which was later expanded to record time-series data.
IV. Leadership, Execution, and Impact
I led the team to deliver product requirements while balancing technical debt against speed, designed and communicated technical strategies and best practices across the team, and established clarity, priority, and roadmaps while removing blockers for engineers. Through strategic hiring and mentorship, I built high-performing teams. I collaborated across product, design, business, and strategy teams for planning, prioritization, and delivery of ambitious features. The result was a foundational, scalable Ed-Tech platform that supported the company's growth and daily operations for thousands of students.
